• Eat Healthy on a Budget
    by Robert Miller

First, and most importantly, stop eating out. Pack lunches and snacks when you leave home for long periods of time. Save restaurants for special occasions and rare treats. You will actually save money and begin to be healthier by shopping at the grocery store. Although a one-time grocery bill may seem large, remember that the food you buy can last beyond a day. Also, if you do not buy unhealthy foods, you cannot eat them.

However, try not to make it last too long. Try to buy items, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, that only remain good for a week. Canned and boxed foods are processed and stored with artificial preservatives and sodium. Buying fresher automatically means eating healthier.

Frozen vegetables are an exception to this rule. They are often cheaper than fresh vegetables, and if frozen properly, have just as many nutrients without the added preservatives. Check the sodium content before buying to make sure it is not too high.

Do some research and learn which fruits and vegetables are in season at different times. Usually, in season produce is less expensive and tastes better. Also, learn which produce is grown nearby and try to buy those items. If it has to be shipped in from further away, it will likely be more expensive.

To save money, buy store brand foods instead of name brands. Items such as pasta, eggs, and frozen vegetables are the same in a store package as in a name brand package, and usually much less expensive.

Every time you grocery shop, check the meat section to see if there are markdowns on meat approaching the expiration date. You don't have to cook it right away - freeze it and cook it later. This is a great way to stock up on lean proteins, such as chicken, without paying a premium price.

Always make a list before you go shopping. Lists will help avoid impulse buys, saving money and ensuring that you stick to a good diet.

Since you will be grocery shopping more often, find out if your store offers a rewards or discount card. Most do, and they are very easy to obtain. You will see the savings every time you shop, and you will feel better once you have a fresher, healthier diet.
